Stone Steps Deemed ‘World Class’

Following a competitive tender, Maysand were chosen to rebuild the existing steps in the historic Dukinfield Park.

Dating back to 1902, the 55 steps formed the centre piece of the Park and were framed by a series of grand bronze planters at either side. With just an old black and white photograph of the steps to go on, Maysand set about returning the steps to their former glory.

The scheme, funded by Tameside Borough Council cost £280,000 with the council keen for the steps to be as accurate as possible to the original structure. As the original stone was quarried in the 1900’s, Maysand         sourced a near perfect match, Dunhouse ‘Catcastle Buff’, which makes an instant statement on the park environment.

To complete the rebuild of the steps, a series of bronze planters were positioned in the exact locations of those beforehand.

Peter Stafford, Conservation officer at Tameside Council said: “Having worked with Maysand in the past I knew we would be guaranteed a fantastic replacement to the historic steps. Maysand’s specialism in conservation work of this nature was the deciding factor in our decision to award them the project, and we’re all absolutely thrilled with the end result.”

Speaking at the grand opening of the steps, Councillor Brian Wild, commented: “I’m very proud to open such a fantastic structure, it’s something the whole town can be truly proud of.”

Maysand Managing Director, Bryn Lisle explains why this project was such a success: “With all our projects we aim to carry out our work as sympathetically as possible and Dukinfield was a prime example of this. The original steps were such a landmark in the town that we were keen to continue that tradition. It’s brilliant to hear the steps have been so warmly received by residents and users of the park.”
